The Planet School

A fun, exploratory identity for an experimental, field-based high school in the USA.

About the project

Project information

Art Director. This work was done during my tenure at Lazy Eight.

The Planet School is an experimental high school in the USA where learning happens in the field rather than from a textbook. A year runs as five adventures, from sailing a tall ship to building an off-grid home, so the education is experiential and science-led instead of classroom-bound.

The brief was to design an identity as fun and experimental as the school itself. It had to feel like an invitation to explore, energetic and curious, and signal clearly that this is not ordinary book-based schooling.

The symbol is an astronaut, at once ironic and exact. Space exploration is the greatest journey humans have taken, the purest act of curiosity and discovery, and that idea sits at the heart of a school built around exploring the real world.

The logo grows from that astronaut, and the whole identity flows out of it. The system is playful and dynamic, with bold colour and a sense of motion that matches a year spent outside, across the ocean, the forest, the mountains, and the city.

Across every touchpoint the brand keeps the same spirit: curious, hands-on, and built for discovery. It makes the case, before a single line of copy, that the most rewarding way to learn is to go out and do it.
